Eco-refills: our eco-friendly commitment to a sustainable future!

Since our launch in 2017 as a natural, vegan, and organic cosmetics brand, our commitment to animal welfare and environmental protection has been at the heart of our philosophy. Following numerous requests from our valued customers, we have decided to answer the call by launching eco-refills for our cleansers. Behind this project lies an eco-responsible approach that is in line with our values.

Since our inception 6 years ago, we have seen a good number of ecological "solutions" flourish. But we know from experience that every "miracle" solution must be studied in depth. We have therefore conducted research on glass "airless" containers, so-called "plant-based" plastics, and "biodegradable" packaging, and each time our investigation led to great disappointment. It was merely marketing on the part of other brands as well as packaging suppliers and in no way a real solution to reduce our impact.

A true eco-responsible solution must, in our view, meet several criteria:
- It must represent an advancement over what is already available.
- It must be immediately achievable and not in a few years' time.

- It must be made in Europe to drastically reduce transport and therefore CO2 emissions.

- It must solve a problem without creating another one.

- We must be able to implement it today while being realistic with our manufacturing workshop, as well as our human and financial resources.

It is clear that the vast majority of the solutions we studied did not meet these specifications.

But then, we saw eco-refills flourishing and we dove back into an investigation!

In our constant quest for eco-responsibility, we have heard the calls of our environmentally conscious customers. Yes, because the messages and comments you send us are truly read! And that is how we began to study eco-refills.

At first, we put them aside. Several points seemed to us to be barriers to implementing eco-refills in our skincare range. At the beginning of our study, mono-material eco-refills did not exist. This was a major drawback because it meant they were not recyclable. The second blocking point was the quantities requested by packaging suppliers. We were very far from our needs.

But the idea never left our minds. We were going to achieve eco-refills sooner or later. We therefore carried out numerous in-house trials. For years, the La Canopée team has been using eco-refills of many shapes, sizes, and materials. These many months, even years, of research have taught us a lot. We needed an eco-refill for our cleansers, in mono-material PE packaging that allows for refilling the cleanser in question twice.

The breakthrough came when these famous eco-refills could meet all our criteria. Their manufacturing is made in Europe, they were finally available in mono-material, and the quantities began to be affordable. We then embarked on the adventure and delved deeper into research!

We worked hard on this project in R&D (research and development), looking for the most suitable packaging in terms of eco-responsibility while maintaining our commitment to quality products. Because for this second phase of implementation, we had to go into the detail of the ecological impact and the compatibility between these eco-refills and our formulas. After months of studies to validate them, the eco-refills were finally going to be born for our cleansers!

The eco-refills are therefore made of 100% recyclable mono-material PE, a significant advancement in our eco-responsible approach.

At La Canopée, recyclability has always been at the heart of our projects. We wish to achieve 100% recyclability across our entire skincare range. This is already the case for a large number of our cosmetic products. The eco-refills therefore absolutely had to be. Mono-material packaging ensures recyclability in most sorting centers. You must therefore be sure to add your empty eco-refill to the recycling bin.

The switch to eco-refills represents a significant step towards reducing our use of plastic, thereby contributing to the preservation of our planet. The use of plastic is unfortunately part of our business. We must therefore not only use it sparingly, but also use plastics that are well-recycled and compatible with our cosmetics. But this time, the eco-refill drastically reduces the use of plastic by allowing the reuse of the first bottle.
