Routine du soir

The importance of a bedtime routine

Did you know that most skin problems are linked to improper cleansing?

Every day, our skin is exposed to pollution, dust, sebum, and makeup, which can clog pores and lead to various skin issues. To have clear skin that is well-oxygenated and able to regenerate correctly, it is crucial to adopt a nighttime beauty routine. In this article, we will explore why it is essential to cleanse your skin at the end of the day (and not just in the morning), the importance of double cleansing, and the benefits it brings to our skin.

Why trust us:

  • We have been at the heart of green chemistry innovation for nearly 10 years.

  • More than 50,000 customers have trusted us since the beginning on this site and demonstrate their loyalty to us.

  • Passionate, we closely follow all advances in botany, cosmetics, and also dermatology.

Why Cleanse Your Skin at the End of the Day?

Throughout the day, our skin accumulates various impurities such as pollution, dust, sebum, and makeup. These elements can clog pores and lead to the appearance of blackheads, acne, and redness. They can also acidify the hydrolipidic film and lead to its degradation. In these cases, we observe that the skin becomes sensitized and can even become atopic. The skin, like any organ, needs to be clean to function correctly. Without proper cleansing at night, impurities accumulate, which can cause inflammation and skin infections.

I remember a client who confided in me that she spent a fortune on cosmetics without managing to soothe her skin. After a discussion with her, I realized that evening cleansing was not systematic and that, with fatigue, this step was often skipped. I therefore recommended double cleansing to her, and from that moment on, her skin changed radically! I often repeat: it is useless to have the best skincare products if you have not found the right cleansers for your skin and if you do not cleanse your face at night.

When you sleep, your skin regenerates:

It is during the night that skin cells repair and renew themselves. For this process to take place optimally, it is essential that the skin be clean. Skin cells can then better absorb the applied treatments and regenerate effectively.

Cleansing the skin at night therefore prepares it to take full advantage of the creams and serums applied, thus optimizing their benefits.

Cleansing your face in the morning:

It's good, or at least, if it's a habit and a pleasure for you, then good, but it is not an obligation. Many think that it is enough to cleanse their skin in the morning. However, morning cleansing does not replace nighttime cleansing.

Indeed, impurities accumulated during the day will have an impact during the night when your skin tries to regenerate. Morning cleansing mainly aims to eliminate the excess sebum produced during the night, while evening cleansing focuses on eliminating pollutants and residues from the day.

As you will have understood, in cosmetics, there are no rules, except that nighttime cleansing is MANDATORY for everyone. For the rest, it is up to each individual.

But what is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step skin cleansing method, originating from the Asian beauty routine, particularly popular in South Korea and Japan. This technique aims to effectively eliminate all impurities from the skin.

First Step:
Oil-based cleansing

The first cleanse uses a cleansing oil to dissolve oil-soluble impurities such as makeup, sebum, pollution, and sunscreen. We offer two different cleansing oils.

Second Step:
Water-based cleansing

The second cleanse uses a water-based cleanser such as a jelly, foam, or milk to remove water-soluble impurities like sweat and remaining dust, as well as traces of oil left behind by the first phase.

This step ensures that pores are cleared and that the skin is completely clean and ready to absorb subsequent skincare products.

Double cleansing prepares the skin for subsequent skincare. Well-cleansed skin is more receptive to creams, serums, and other treatments, which allows these products to penetrate more deeply and function more effectively. It is an essential practice to prevent various skin problems like acne, blackheads, and redness. By removing impurities and bacteria, this method reduces inflammation and skin infections. It also helps to balance sebum production, thus reducing excess oiliness or dryness. In fact, it is a way to give your skin the right tools so that it functions optimally.

Product Tips
For effective double cleansing, it is important to choose products adapted to your skin type and concerns.

Here are some recommendations:

🌸 Dry and sensitive skin:

Gentle Floral Cleansing Oil + Anti-Tightness Gentle Foam

🎯 Blemish-prone skin and combination to oily skin:

Gentle Floral Cleansing Oil + Black Cleansing Jelly with Purifying Actives

🌼 Mature skin or skin seeking anti-aging:

Intense Antioxidant Cleansing Oil + Black Cleansing Jelly with Purifying Actives

And what about the rest of my evening routine?

So, as you have understood, we start with a double cleanse. Remember to apply your cleansing oil with your hands to dry skin, massage your face, then rinse with lukewarm water to remove the oil. Then move on to your cleanser to finish the double cleansing.

Exfoliate once a week:

Exfoliation is an important step to remove dead skin cells.

It should ideally be performed once a week for all skin types, with an exception for blemish-prone skin which should be exfoliated more regularly: once a week on the entire face and then two to three times a week on the blemish-prone area.

At La Canopée, we naturally recommend AHA (fruit acid) exfoliants, which means chemical (non-mechanical) exfoliation (save your grainy scrubs for the body, your face deserves better).

Here is the fruit acid exfoliant our customers adore:

Starting with hydration:

To remove the limescale residue left by plain tap water, we recommend spraying a mist. This will provide initial hydration and allow for better absorption of cosmetic active ingredients. For dry, tight skin or mature skin, this is an essential step!

After hydrating your skin with a mist, you can apply your cream and/or serum according to your needs and concerns. If you are unsure about your skin's needs, don't hesitate to take advantage of expert advice by booking an appointment with Lucile, a La Canopée expert: [Book an appointment]

In summary, cleansing your skin at night is crucial for maintaining healthy, radiant skin. Double cleansing is an effective and gentle method to remove all impurities and prepare the skin for nighttime treatments. Well-cleansed skin regenerates better, absorbs skincare products more effectively, and stays better hydrated. Adopting this evening beauty routine will help you prevent various skin problems and achieve more beautiful, healthier skin!

Is double cleansing suitable for my sensitive skin?

Yes, yes, and yes again! Sensitive skin has a double incentive to be consistent with double cleansing. These skin types need good oxygenation and effective skin renewal. At La Canopée, the quality of our formulas and our expertise in green chemistry allow us to offer extremely gentle makeup removers and cleansers that perfectly address the issues of sensitive and atopic skin.

Should I double cleanse if I don't wear makeup?

Yes, you still should, because we are almost all exposed to environmental pollution. If you live deep in the unpolluted countryside, do not wear sunscreen, and do not wear makeup, you may not need to double cleanse every night, but I would say that for great skin quality, it would be beneficial to do it 2 to 3 times a week.

What are the signs that I am not cleansing my skin well?

It is often sensitive skin specifically with redness, but it can also be blackheads, acne, dull skin, irritation, etc. In general, when people tell me about sensitive, tight, or combination skin, I ask about their cleansing routine, and either it is not done at night, or they are using a product that is far too aggressive for the skin, such as micellar water or a solid soap.

By adopting these tips and incorporating double cleansing into your routine, you will give your skin the best chance to remain healthy, radiant, and beautiful. Remember: well-cleansed skin is happy skin!

I wish you a wonderful day and see you soon!
