Exfoliation in summer: the essential step
Summer is the season of sunshine, vacations, and long days spent outdoors. ☀️ But while the sun makes us feel good (and boosts our vitamin D), it can also be less gentle on our skin. Prolonged exposure, heat, perspiration… all of this can promote the appearance of spots, scars, blemishes, or an uneven complexion.
Fortunately, one simple and gentle gesture can change everything: exfoliation. At La Canopée, it is of course done with respect for your skin's nature and with the incomparable benefits of fruit. When we say that fruit is life!

Why exfoliate your skin in the summer?
In the summer, the skin is put to the test. Under the effect of heat, UV rays, sweat, dust, and sunscreen residues, it quickly becomes congested. These external aggressions reveal the accumulation of dead cells on the surface of the epidermis. These eventually clog pores, dull the complexion, accentuate irregularities, and limit the effectiveness of the skincare products applied subsequently.
Exfoliation allows you to clear the slate: it frees the skin from this veil of impurities, refines texture, stimulates cell renewal, and restores the skin's natural radiance. This process also restores suppleness and receptivity to the skin, which means your moisturizing, soothing, and nourishing skincare products penetrate better and act more effectively.
In the summer, when the skin needs lightness and freshness, exfoliating becomes a fundamental gesture. Done correctly, and with the right active ingredients, it enhances the skin without ever weakening it.
1️⃣ For a more even and lasting tan:
Contrary to popular belief, exfoliating your skin does not "remove your tan"; quite the opposite! The tan forms in the deep layers of the epidermis, while exfoliation only acts on the surface, where dead cells accumulate. By eliminating them regularly, you help the skin remain bright, smooth, and even.
As a result, you get a more regular, radiant tan that lasts longer. Because skin cleared of its dead cells renews itself better and fixes melanin more effectively. You can thus prolong your summer glow without the "spotted" or "peeling skin" effect when returning from vacation.
However, be careful: if you have suffered a sunburn, stop exfoliating until the inflammation has ended. Your skin should no longer be painful! In case of sunburn, spray on a hydrating mist and apply the magic ointment to help the skin soothe and heal quickly.
2️⃣ For a more soft, healthy, and blemish-free skin:
In the summer, our skin reacts to external aggressions with a natural thickening phenomenon, also called hyperkeratinization. This makes it more resistant to the sun in the short term, but in the long term, it promotes the appearance of blemishes, blackheads, and pimples as soon as the vacation ends.
This thickened horny layer also prevents skincare products from penetrating well and promotes dehydration. One then has this feeling of "tight skin," despite the skincare applied. This also explains the post-summer rebound effect, with the emergence of blemishes at the start of the school year.
Exfoliating regularly during the summer is a way to prevent these inconveniences. You keep your skin soft, smooth, better breathing, and balanced throughout the season.
Prioritizing chemical over mechanical exfoliation: what are the differences?
There are mainly two types of exfoliation: mechanical and chemical. Understanding them well means protecting your skin better. At La Canopée, we are fervent defenders of chemical exfoliation for the face; let us explain!
Mechanical exfoliation:
Mechanical exfoliation relies on the action of small grains that, through friction, draw off dead cells. It is found in many scrubs containing crushed apricot kernels, sugar grains, or even synthetic beads.
❌ Problem: on the face, this type of exfoliation is often too aggressive. It creates micro-lesions that are invisible to the naked eye but very real, which alter the hydrolipidic film and weaken the skin barrier. In reaction, the skin can thicken further, become more reactive, oilier, or conversely drier. It is a vicious circle that worsens imbalances instead of correcting them.
Except for thicker areas of the body (elbows, legs, back...), it is recommended to avoid this type of scrub on the face, especially in summer.
Chemical exfoliation is more respectful. It uses natural acids (when it comes to La Canopée) such as AHAs, PHAs, or BHAs to gently dissolve the bonds between dead cells, allowing their elimination without scrubbing. It is effective, and chemical exfoliation takes care of living tissue!
At La Canopée, with the exfoliating mask, we have chosen fruit acids to offer an exfoliation that is as effective as it is gentle because it contains plenty of glycerin, which will moisturize at the same time.
These organic acids are suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive, and allow for a smoothing and radiant result from the very first applications. But its effectiveness lies in consistency. The skin regains a fine texture, a silky feel, and a much more even complexion.
For issues with pimples, acne, or blackheads, you can opt for the targeted perfection care with PHAs and BHAs and apply it locally.
How to properly use the La Canopée exfoliating mask in summer?
The best time to exfoliate is in the evening, when the skin is at rest and protected from UV rays. We recommend applying it after double cleansing to optimize the penetration of the acids and their deep-acting effects. Double cleansing helps remove sunscreen, sweat, and impurities, leaving the skin perfectly prepped.
The Fruit Acid Exfoliating Mask:
✔️ Refined skin texture: fruit acids smooth the skin's surface by eliminating dead cells.
✔️ Tightened pores: regular exfoliation helps tighten enlarged pores, giving the skin a more uniform appearance.
✔️ Radiant complexion: by promoting cell renewal, fruit acids bring radiance and even out the complexion.
Leave the exfoliating mask on for at least 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. You may feel slight tingling during application on more sensitive skin; this is a sign that the fruit acids are working.
✨ And to finish in style, follow up with our soothing milky rose mask.
Ultra-comforting, it saturates the skin with water, soothes any redness, and restores its full elasticity. In summer, skin tends to become dehydrated and lose its suppleness.
This duo of exfoliation and intense hydration/repair is therefore perfect for a balanced routine.
Exfoliation: a beauty step, but also a true act of prevention
Regularly exfoliating your skin during the summer is also a way to take deep action to preserve skin health and prevent a number of long-term issues. By removing dead cells and promoting cell renewal, exfoliation helps limit the appearance of dark spots or residual marks from blemishes, which are often exacerbated by UV rays. Smoother, more homogeneous skin resists irregularities better.
This step also helps tighten pores, reduce shine linked to excess sebum, and limit skin congestion that can lead to breakouts or uneven texture. The skin breathes better, regulates itself more easily, and remains balanced even in high heat. Another benefit: by limiting the excessive thickening of the stratum corneum, exfoliation reduces signs of skin sagging linked to dehydration and oxidative stress. Well-exfoliated skin is more supple, toned, and retains its firmness better.
Finally, by stimulating cellular regeneration, we also act on the first signs of aging such as fine lines, loss of radiance, or lack of elasticity. Exfoliation thus becomes a simple yet powerful tool in preventing skin aging. Far beyond the immediate radiance it provides, exfoliation is a fundamental, crucial form of protection for keeping skin healthy, young, and resilient. It prepares the ground for all subsequent skincare, which will be better absorbed, more effective, and perfectly suited to skin that is ready to receive it.
We wish you a beautiful summer taking care of your skin with La Canopée! 🌞
