Double cleansing: THE essential beauty step

At La Canopée, double cleansing is king! We are convinced of its importance for skin beauty, and unfortunately, we believe that if it is not done, or done "incorrectly," your cosmetic routine risks being a failure. Let's revisit this essential beauty step together.

Double cleansing is a method of cleansing the epidermis inspired by Japanese layering that involves two steps. These are quite distinct and each has its own importance.

We start with an oil-based step that will remove all lipophilic (i.e., oily) impurities such as makeup, sunscreens, pollution, sebum, etc. Cleansing oils take everything in their path; nothing resists them. We rinse with lukewarm water to remove the oil and all the impurities it has enveloped, and then we move on to the second step. This is done with a water-based cleanser, such as a foam, milk, or jelly, and we then perfect the cleansing by removing oily residues and unclogging pores.

These two steps are essential for achieving perfectly cleansed skin. A well-cleaned epidermis is an epidermis that oxygenates and renews itself well; it is therefore the key to healthy, luminous skin!

But we regularly receive many questions about double cleansing, so I will strive to answer them here. By the end of this article, double cleansing will hold no more secrets for you!

When should you practice double cleansing?
Morning or evening?

Double cleansing is practiced IN THE EVENING! Particularly because cleansing your face at night is almost an obligation. Don't feel guilty reading these lines; yes, sometimes laziness takes hold, but it is true that during the day your epidermis is put to a severe test and it "picks up" all kinds of particles in the air, in addition to what you may have applied to it like makeup or sunscreen. Your skin therefore needs to breathe! All these elements eventually become occlusive and prevent proper oxygenation. In the long term, this results in the degradation of your skin's protective hydrolipidic film and more serious skin problems. So don't worry, it's not too late; the right habit is evening cleansing, and you will see the difference on your face!

I never wear makeup; should I practice double cleansing?

Double cleansing is not just for people who wear makeup. Those who live in a polluted environment, who smoke, or who wear sunscreens are strongly encouraged to practice double cleansing. If you live in the countryside, do not smoke, and do not wear makeup, we still recommend double cleansing 2 to 3 times a week to help your skin regenerate well and stay beautiful and healthy.

How should I apply cleansing oil?
In the shower?

The first step of double cleansing begins with an oil-based step, using a cleansing oil that will attract all oily impurities to itself.

Oil can only be effective if you perform this step on a dry face! The presence of water will completely disrupt the makeup-removing and cleansing power of oils.

So, if you like to shower in the evening, you can add a few drops of cleansing oil to the palm of your hand, massage your face (even for 30 seconds) to thoroughly remove all impurities, and then step into the shower to rinse off your oil.

But the application of the oil must absolutely be done on a dry face with dry hands.

Can I apply my cleansing oil with a cotton pad?

Yes, absolutely, you can pour a few drops of cleansing oil onto a cotton pad and pass it over your entire face. However, this is not the method we recommend most. Using a cotton pad forces you to use more oil, as it absorbs a lot of product, and it is also more aggressive to the skin than applying it with your fingers. So for sensitive skin, this is a practice that risks being too harsh.
We recommend applying a few drops to your fingers and simply massaging your face to pick up all the impurities. It is also a gesture that will activate blood and lymphatic microcirculation and help give you a healthy glow!

I have sensitive skin; can I practice double cleansing?

Yes, yes, and yes! Double cleansing is actually essential for sensitive skin because it needs to be perfectly cleansed without being aggressed. That is the magic of double cleansing. The oil will properly remove makeup and cleanse away makeup, pollution, sunscreens, and all other oily impurities, and the second step is necessary to clean the skin's pores, thus allowing it to oxygenate and regenerate properly.

However, it is a matter of choosing the right products for sensitive skin, namely the soft floral oil for the first step and the anti-tightness gentle foam or the vanilla gentle milk for the second!

I have oily skin, should I use cleansing oil? Won't it make me shine even more?

No, quite the contrary. Oily skin has a higher production of sebum, sometimes precisely because we want to dry it out at all costs. But if the skin produces excess sebum, it is because it needs it, and often it comes to compensate for a lack of lipids!

Removing makeup from oily skin will help remove excess sebum while comforting the skin, and this often helps regulate sebum secretions. Oily skin is skin that needs to be pampered, and with which you must have gentle gestures to avoid overstimulating the sebaceous glands.

Should I rinse off the cleansing milk?

ABSOLUTELY!

All cleansers should be rinsed off. I like to explain that it is exactly as if you were getting out of the shower with soap still on your body.

Cleansers, whether in milk, jelly, foam, or micellar water form, contain foaming agents; that is what gives them their cleansing power.

If you don't rinse off your cleansing milk, you keep those foaming agents on your skin, and in addition to that, you don't remove all the impurities; part of them remains on your face.

So you rinse with clear water!

How to choose the right products for double cleansing?

For the first step, it all depends on your skin concerns and the sensitivity of your skin and eyes. For people with dull complexions who wish to provide anti-aging active ingredients, we recommend the intense antioxidant cleansing oil. But for sensitive eyes, oily skin, skin with imperfections, or even reactive skin, we recommend the soft floral cleansing oil, which will help the skin calm down.

For the second step, that of the water-based cleanser, here too La Canopée provides tailor-made solutions. If you have more imperfections, mixed to oily skin, are a smoker, or live in an urban environment, we would prefer a sanitizing and purifying cleanser that will provide all the necessary active ingredients to your skin to fight against these annoyances. You will therefore have the choice between the black cleansing jelly with purifying active ingredients and the aromatic plant cleansing foam.

If you have sensitive skin that feels tight, or is dry or atopic, we would prefer to choose between the anti-tightness gentle foam or the vanilla gentle milk.
